Mussels making us wait

12:43 10/07/2013
Mussel lovers will have to wait until the end of the month for the new season to begin. According to the Dutch Fish Product Board, the mollusks could need until at least July 24 to grow to the desired quality.

A long and unusually cold spring is to blame for the mussels' delayed debut this year. Today in Yerseke, Zeeland, growers and merchants are gathered to measure quality. This annual mussel inspection is used to determine the current state of the shellfish and where the best ones will come from this season. On Thursday it will be announced when the season officially begins. According to Omroep Zeeland, it is the first time since 2006 that the Zeeland mussel season starts so much later than expected.
