Multinationals emit 50% more CO2 than Belgium
The ten largest food companies in the world, called the Big Ten, are together responsible for CO2 emissions that are 50% higher than that of Belgium, according to the report ‘A Climate of Secrecy’, published today by the NGO Oxfam.
The Big Ten produce about 263.7 million tons of greenhouse gases per year, says Oxfam. The companies are Kellogg, General Mills, Coca-Cola, Danone, Mars, Nestle, PepsiCo, Unilever, Associated British Foods and Mondelez International.
Oxfam says that the food industry is already responsible for a quarter of global CO2 emissions. “And the emissions continue to grow as demand for food increases,” Oxfam said in a press release. The NGO’s aim with the report is to encourage the Big Ten companies to adopt more responsible climate policies.
