Major roadworks in Brussels lie ahead

10:25 16/06/2014

Major roadworks will be conducted in Brussels over the summer period that will result in the closure of the Reyers viaduct and the Cinquantenaire/Jubelpark tunnel in Brussels from June 30. Traffic in the capital is generally down 20% in the summer compared to the rest of the year, but the Brussels body in charge of infrastructure said on Friday that the renovation works “may cause serious disruption to traffic”.

Access to the entry roads to the Reyers viaduct will be completely blocked off in both directions from June 30 to September 30. Around 33,000 vehicles make use of the viaduct every day and drivers are being warned to avoid the area altogether.

Waterproofing the Cinquantenaire tunnel will result in its closure in the direction of Montgomery from June 30 to August 29. Specifically, it will blocked from the ‘Y’ junction in the Belliard tunnel to the Cinquantenaire tunnel. Access to the E40 motorway will not be affected. “Despite measures to improve the situation, the traffic around Cinquantenaire will be chaotic,” said Bruxelles Mobilité/Brussel Mobiliteit.

It has also indicated that there will be roadworks carried out over the summer on Place Meiser, Rue Royale (Koningsstraat), Avenue Madoux, Rue de Stalle and in the Van Praet tunnel. Bruxelles Mobilité advises drivers to switch to public transport, walking or cycling during the road works.
