KVS presents world premiere of Belgian-Palestinian dance production
Belgian and Palestinian choreographers unite to stage the world premiere of Badke(remix), a reworking of a dance performance that reflects the emergency of the war in Gaza.
Originally created by Koen Augustijnen, Rosalba Torres and Hildegard De Vuyst, the production toured worldwide between 2013 and 2016 with 10 Palestinian dancers.
Now the remix returns the work to Palestinian hands, notably those of choreographers Ata Khattab and Amir Sabra. They have rewritten it to highlight the war-torn territory’s zest for life, while showing dance as a form of resistance.
The piece is a modern interpretation of the dabke, a traditional Palestinian dance that is performed at weddings and celebrations. Fusing contemporary dance, hip-hop, capoeira, and circus, performers present an explosion of joy and solidarity. It serves as a pertinent antidote to the harsh reality of life in the Middle Eastern country.
Running at KVS Bol from 11 to 13 June, the performance is a collaboration between laGeste and Stereo48 and a co-production by KVS and viernulvier.
KVS is also participating in the Speak Up for Palestine event at KVS Bol on 17 June. The Royal Flemish Theatre has already called for an immediate ceasefire to the hostilities as part of its support for Artists4Palestine and an Apartheid-Free Zone.
The initiative in Brussels by Art Workers For Palestine Belgium, Oxfam and Bruxelles Laïque, includes talks, performances, music and other activities. Open to everyone, it adopts a pay-what-you-can system with all proceeds going directly to organisations supporting Palestine.
