Kalmthout teens build Belgium’s biggest snowman

The largest snowman ever built in Belgium is in Kalmthout, Antwerp province. Built by teenage siblings Kevin, Stefan and Kim Ysenbaardt, the snowman stands 7.5 metres tall.

"Several years ago, I looked up how big Belgium’s largest snowman was," Kevin told various Belgian media. "Then my brother and sister and I started to build our own. And every year, the snowman got a little bit bigger."

At 7.5 metres, the snowman breaks the family’s own 2010 record of 7 metres. The Ysenbaardt siblings built the giant snowman by starting out with a very broad base, using buckets to collect the snow and only a ladder to pile the blocks of snow upon each other. “We were out there for almost three days," said Kevin. The siblings received occasional help from their father who “thought it was dangerous and would never work," according to Kim.

The three snowman builders aim to one day break the current record of Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg, which is 11 metres.
