Jo Cox Square unveiled in central Brussels

22:36 27/09/2018

Brussels now has a Jo Cox Square, in honour of the murdered British member of parliament who spent six years living and working in the Belgian capital.

The square behind the Ancienne Belgique concert hall was not chosen at random to carry Cox's name - the AB was a venue she visited often during her time in Brussels.

A memorial plaque commemorating the British MP was unveiled on Thursday, at a ceremony attended by members of Cox's family, Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn and Brussels mayor Philippe Close.

"It's an honour that the city of Brussels has chosen to remember Jo in this way," said Cox's sister, Kim Leadbeater (pictured). "She had a lot of happy times here and made deep and lasting friendships."

Cox, who was the Labour MP for Birstall in West Yorkshire, had strong connections to Brussels, having worked as an assistant to Glenys Kinnock MEP and at Oxfam International.

She was killed in her constituency in June 2016, just a week before the UK's referendum on its membership of the EU.
