Jewish Museum remembers shooting victims

09:34 25/06/2014

One month after a gunman opened fire at the Jewish Museum of Belgium in Brussels killing four people, museum staff gathered at the Museum’s premises on Tuesday to commemorate the lives of those killed: Myriam and Emmanuel Riva, Dominique Sabrier and Alexandre Strens all died subsequent to the attack.

Since the shooting on 24 May, the museum has yet to re-open its doors. But around 50 people attended the commemoration service including Brussels Mayor Yvan Mayeur.

The museum team invited museums in Brussels, Flanders, Wallonia and abroad to take part in their initiative by placing a lit candle at the entrance to their museums and holding a minute’s silence.

According to Leen Ochelen, director of the Brussels Museums Council, around 20 Brussels institutions responded to the call to commemorate the anniversary of the attack. An electric candle was placed in the doorway to the Cinquantenaire Museum and a choir performed Jewish songs at the Musée d’Art ancien.
