Insurance companies reject record number of drivers
Belgian auto insurance companies last year refused service to 29,340 drivers because they were considered too risky or had caused too many accidents, a record high, according to the Mediahuis newspapers.
The phenomenon is confirmed by the Pricing Agency, an insurance plan launched by the Belgian government in 2003 to provide coverage for the uninsured who have been rejected by insurance companies at least three times. The Pricing Agency last year received about 30,000 applications, an increase of more than 60% compared with 2013.
Test-Achats, the Belgian non-profit organisation for consumer protection, calls it a worrying trend and blames the arbitrary policies of some insurers. "Some major insurance companies will kick you off their plan just for being involved in an accident. It doesn’t even matter whether you’re at fault."
Comments
The reason insurance companies are not happy with drivers who have had accidents but are "not at fault" is they so often are at fault. Very few accidents can be 100 percent attributed to one driver.
It's possible to have accident after accident while "not at fault" and some people do, particularly those who are going to be bloody minded about their "priority" and boy, isn't that an issue around here!
