Increase in number of storks spotted in Brussels
Ornithologists have counted 147 stork sightings in Brussels since mid-January. This week there was a peak in the number of the large black-and-white birds spotted in the European capital, as they make their way north from their wintering grounds in Africa, according to Brussel Deze Week.
Witnesses sighted a group of about 70 storks flying over Brussels’ north district, and another dozen or so were spotted circling high above Rue de la Loi.
"Storks soar in circles, using thermals - where air rises due to heat - to save energy,” explains Jan Rodts of bird protection organisation Vogelbescherming. “This also explains why some storks land in the middle of the city. They have to find a place to rest at night, when there are no thermals to help them fly."
