Hundreds campaign against nuclear weapons

14:10 21/10/2013

In the Brussels Cinquantenaire Park on Sunday, some 1,500 people gathered in support of a new campaign against the presence of nuclear weapons in Belgium. The 'Time to go' campaign's most immediate cause for action is the approval to modernise U.S. nuclear weapons in Limburg's Kleine-Brogel. Moreover, the initiators aim to put nuclear weapons on the political agenda just a few months before elections start. The peaceful initiative has the support of political parties such as Groen and Ecolo and various social movements. Sp.a has already proposed a bill to have nuclear weapons removed from Belgium entirely. "There have been nuclear weapons in Belgium for 50 years," say organisers. "And it's been 30 years since tens of thousands of people came out onto the streets to express their disapproval; It's high time we get this movement going again."
