French and Dutch-speaking schools share same holidays

21:25 08/03/2018

Belgium's French-speaking schools have moved next year's Easter holiday dates to make them the same as in the Dutch-speaking system.

Initially, Flemish students were due to break up for Easter a week earlier than their Francophone counterparts - a headache for families in Brussels and the suburbs who have children studying in both school systems.

The Wallonia-Brussels government voted on Wednesday to align its 2018/19 holiday calendar with the Flemish one. Easter holidays will be from 8-22 April 2019 in all schools.

The date mismatch had arisen because of a decree requiring schools in the Wallonia-Brussels Federation to have between 181 and 183 days of class per academic year.

This caused a problem with the timing of public holidays around Easter and May 2019. By rewording the decree to 180-184 days, holidays can be better planned in the future.
