Forest man hangs from light pole for two hours to avoid police

A man in Forest gave his neighbours quite a show yesterday morning, when he took to a light pole to escape being arrested by police. He hung on for two hours.

According to a spokesperson for the Brussels South police zone, police arrived at the man’s third-story flat on Avenue Wielemans Ceuppens at about 7.30 on Wednesday morning. They had a warrant to search the premises.

“The man ran onto his terrace and then jumped onto a light pole,” said spokesperson Kathleen Calie. The wall-mounted pole was reachable from the man’s railing (pictured). When the police suggested helping him out of the situation, he threatened to jump.

Police were able to contact the man’s lawyer, who spoke with him at length. After a total of two hours, he finally gave up. The fire department was called to get him off of the lamppost.

The street was closed to traffic in the interim.

His lawyer enlightened him, made him see the light, even though it had been right in his face the whole time.
