€30 million to increase school capacity in Brussels and Wallonia

21:49 21/02/2018

An extra 5,400 places are to be made available in Belgium's French-speaking schools, the Wallonia-Brussels government has announced.

Faced with a population boom, the government voted on Wednesday to spend €30 million on hiring more teachers and opening up more classes.

In total, 28 schools around Wallonia and Brussels will benefit from the extra funding, with the creation of 850 places for nursery and primary pupils and 4,530 extra secondary school places.

Meanwhile, the Wallonia-Brussels parliament has passed a resolution requiring school canteens to provide more vegetarian meal options.

The text sets out stricter rules on school menus to "better take into account food intolerances and students' lifestyle choices".
