Earth's capacity exceeded for this year
As of today, mankind has consumed in 2013 more than what the earth can produce in one year's time. This year's so-called "Earth Overshoot Day" falls two days earlier than last year's, says environmental group WWF. The Global Footprint Network calculates "Earth Overshoot Day", the day when human consumption of natural resources has exceeded the earth's capacity for one year. Today, more than 80% of the world population lives in countries that consume more than they can produce. In order to meet the needs of the Japanese, for example, there is 7.1 times the surface area of Japan necessary. The Italians, meanwhile, consume the equivalent of four Italys and Belgians would need 5.3 times the size of Belgium to match their consumption.
