Cowboy rock, open road travelling, contemporary writers and a festival highlighting global poverty… just some of this week’s upcoming events

If you dig blues and country music, Belgo Cowboys are playing La Cuve à bière in Woluwe-Saint-Lambert on Saturday evening, from 21.00. The Brussels-based expat quartet (pictured) consists of Marius Costea and Rahul Venkit on guitar and vocals, Enea Pista Guerra on percussion and drums and Derek Upton on bass.

Wanderers and nomads tempted to explore Belgium and Europe in a motorhome, can find inspiration at the Mobicar’15 fair at Brussels Expo this weekend. The International Caravan and Motorhome Fair has all the best brands and products for travellers wanting to experience the open road.

American writer Jonathan Franzen appears at Bozar on Sunday to present his latest novel Purity. Franzen’s first book in five years centres on college graduate Pip who goes in search of her identity, crossing continents and travelling back and forth in time. The author of Freedom and Corrections is presented by Flemish writer Saskia De Coster and will be moderated by journalist Annelies Beck.

Highlighting the problem of hunger around the world, Festival AlimenTERRE raises awareness in Brussels and Wallonia until Sunday. With film screenings, talks and other events, it promotes sustainable methods of feeding the planet. At Cinéma Galeries in Brussels, Ciné Le Parc in Charleroi, Centre Culturel des Chiroux and CRIE in Liège, Mundo N in Namur , Centre Culturel d’Ottignies and Studio 11 in Louvain-la-Neuve and Maison de la Culture d’Arlon in Luxembourg Province.

Belgium shows off its couture credentials in the fourth edition of Brussels Fashion Days at Square Brussels Meeting Center in the Mont des Arts from Friday to Saturday. Both emerging and established designers participate in four shows, while fashionistas can also enjoy events such as a fashion pop-up store, school street, talk by Elle Belgique’s chief editor and refreshments. Tickets €8-€35.

Guardian columnist Olivier Burkeman is in Brussels to talk about the Negative path to happiness on 21 October in two Full Circle events. Burkeman writes about the challenges of modern living in his weekly article This Column Will Change Your Life. The venue for the lunchtime and evening talks will be announced before Wednesday.

Tickets are on sale now for the Irish Theatre Group’s upcoming production of Quietly by award-winning writer Owen McCafferty, from 3-7 November. Directed by Lyn Wainwright, it is a powerful story of truth and forgiveness. Jimmy and Ian are two middle aged Belfast men who meet up one night for the first time. They soon discover a shared past… At The Warehouse. Tickets €15.

Outside Brussels

Pioneering global DJ David Guetta is the surprise guest at the 10th anniversary edition of Legendz on Friday night at Liège. A giant tent has been erected in Ans to stage the electronic dance event, billed as the biggest in Europe, with 15,000 set to party. The French DJ and producer will be followed by German DJ Robin Schulz. Resident DJs Ice Kream et Denix warm up the massive space from 21.00.

Mons 2015 adopts a Japanese flavour with the two events, Home & Away Tokyo and digital artist Hiroaki Umeda at Café Europa until 25 October. Home and Away is the series that sees various guest cities from around the world take over the Maison Folie. Guest curators stage a programme of dance, urban performances, exhibitions and the underground culture and energy of the Japanese capital. Multidisciplinary artist Umeda presents his laser-conducted work Split flow at the digital centre Café Europa.
