Construction workers find box containing heart of first Verviers mayor

09:48 01/09/2020

Construction workers renovating a fountain in Verviers had a surprise when they found a box containing the heart of the city's first mayor.

Pierre David was mayor of Verviers from 1798 until his death in 1839.

His heart had been initially been kept in a box in the town hall - until municipal authorities decided in 1883 to bury the box within a new fountain built in his honour.

Over time it had been forgotten about, until workmen busy restoring the fountain came across the box last week.

The box, which has not been opened, has now gone on display in the city's Museum of Fine Arts, where it can be viewed by the public until 20 September.
