Competition launched for 900 free Interrail passes for 18 year-old Belgians

18:18 30/10/2025

Some 900 young Belgians could receive a free Interrail pass allowing them to travel through up to 30 European countries thanks to the European Commission initiative DiscoverEU.

Belgians born between 1 July 2007 and 31 December 2007 are invited to apply for the train pass between 30 October and 13 November 2026 via the European Youth Portal.

They will need to answer five questions about Europe, its history and its culture, which will help determine the winners.

“The programme aims to promote international mobility, cultural curiosity, and language learning. Beyond the adventure of travel, this initiative fosters open-mindedness, independence, European citizenship values, and essential skills for young people's future,” says the Commission.

Winners will also receive the European Youth Card, which gives them access to discounts on cultural activities, local transport, accommodation and dining.

This Erasmus+ initiative allows young Europeans to explore Europe by train while enjoying new experiences, says the competition. “Travelers will get to discover breathtaking cities and landscapes, whether by the beach, in the mountains, or on an exciting city trip, there’s something for everyone.”

A European Facebook group with over 100,000 members allows participants to share tips, travel hacks and stories.

In Wallonia-Brussels, the Bureau International Jeunesse (BIJ) is the national Erasmus+ agency responsible for informing the winners of each competition.

The BIJ organises pre-departure sessions multiple times a year and has created a #DiscoverEU ambassador network where past winners share their advice and experiences.
