City of Halle looks to future of Brussels River
The City of Halle, outside Brussels, is investigating whether the Senne/Zenne River can flow above ground and be visible again in the centre of Brussels. The river was covered up and built over in the early 20th century, and currently runs underneath the Brussels-Charleroi canal.
Now that Flemish waterway manager Waterwegen en Zeekanaal has been authorised to carry out a large-scale deepening operation of the Brussels-Charleroi canal, the question arose as to the fate of the river Senne/Zenne. Shifting the flow of the river from underground to above ground could cost at least €20 million.
"People in Brussels increasingly view water as an enjoyable amenity in the city, especially as the waterways are becoming cleaner," says Mayor Dirk Pieters. “We could let the river run above ground through the centre of Brussels, and build a park around it.”
A meeting is scheduled for next Tuesday in the City Hall of Halle in order to take into account the opinions of residents and experts. The City Council is expected to make a decision in November.
