Children of divorced parents may register in two municipalities
From next year it will be possible for the children of co-parents in Belgium to register as residents of two municipalities. "Allowing them to register in two places provides a solution for many parents who are divorced and live in two different communes," says MP Sonja Becq, who filed the bill to be signed by the competent minister in January, writes De Standaard.
According to the 2009 law on co-parenting, the children of divorced parents have a right to spend time with each parent, however they can only have an official address registered with one parent. This can lead to complications when the divorced parents live in two different communes, as most communes offer certain discounts and other advantages to their residents, especially for for sports, playgrounds and other leisure facilities.
