Brussels in the running to host Euro 2020
In the most recent interim evaluation of the 19 candidate host countries for football's European Championships in 2020 (Euro 2020), European football's governing body, Uefa, gave Brussels good marks for experience in hosting major events and for public transport. On September 19, Uefa will announce which 13 countries have won the bid to jointly host Euro 2020.
"Uefa's technical committee published a positive evaluation of Brussels’ candidacy, which raises our hopes for the official announcement next Friday in Geneva," says Alain Courtois, president of Euro 2020 Brussels, on the website of the Royal Belgian Football Association.
Unlike previous tournaments, Euro 2020 will take place in 13 different countries. In this way, Uefa president Michel Platini wants to celebrate the European Championships' 60th anniversary.
Belgium hopes to host four matches in the capital, including the opening match. A new stadium (pictured), to be built for the occasion by June 2018 in Brussels’ Heysel district, will be called Eurostadium and have a capacity of 62,613.
