The Belgian capital’s public transport network will be free of charge on New Year’s eve and strengthened, Stib has announced.

Several bus lines are scheduled to run throughout the night, while the metro will be open until 2.30 in the morning.

Some 650 Stib staff members will be on duty on the evening of 31 December to ensure revellers can travel safely in the capital into the early hours. All journeys will be free from midnight until Sunday morning.

Metro lines, the majority of trams, and buses on lines 45, 49, 54, 59, 65, 87 and 96 will run until 2.30.

The service on metro lines is to be increased, as well as on tram lines 4, 7, 9, 10, 39, 44, 55, 81 and 93.

Noctis night buses will run exceptionally from midnight to 5.30 with a frequency of 10 to 20 minutes. In addition, tram line 81 is due to run all night between Trinité and Montgomery stops, with a tram every 15 minutes.

As the city’s firework display is being staged at the foot of the Atomium in Heysel, tram lines 7, 19, 35, and 62 bus 83, and the Noctis N18 will be disrupted during the evening. There is also likely to be some station closures in the neighbourhood.
