Brussels parks closed as Storm Malik crosses Belgium

09:22 31/01/2022

The Brussels region has closed all of its parks and woods until 8.00 on Tuesday morning as Storm Malik brings strong winds and heavy rain to the capital. Ostend and Antwerp have also activated their flood prevention plans.

The Royal Meteorological Institute is forecasting winds gusting up to 85km/h, possibly higher on the coast. Heavy rain is expected in the eastern half of the country, with the possibility of snow above 500 metres.

Nationwide, the 1722 phone helpline has been activated. This number is to be used in the event of storm or water damage requiring the fire brigade's intervention, where there is no threat to life. 1722 exists to avoid the emergency helpline 112 being swamped with non-urgent calls.
