Brussels metro escalators misused daily

The emergency brake on the Brussels metro escalators is used incorrectly some 220 times a day, according to Brussels Transport Minister Brigitte Grouwels.
The Brussels metro has a total of 573 escalators that are equipped with emergency brakes for safety purposes. Due to unnecessary use of the emergency brake last year, the escalators were only available and working about 95.3 percent of the time. In the same year, maintenance costs on the escalators amounted to €6.5 million.
