Brussels launches plan to renovate city's fountains
The City of Brussels is launching an extensive renovation and maintenance programme for 12 of its iconic fountains.
The renovations will span six years and the plan follows a proposal from first alderman Florence Frelinx (MR), who is responsible for the municipality’s historical heritage.
“Preserving our fountains means preserving part of Brussels’ identity,” said Frelinx.
“It also reminds us that our heritage should not be frozen in time, but should live on every day, in the heart of the city and at the service of its inhabitants.”
The first phase has been approved by the municipal council and will start in 2025, targeting the fountains considered top priorities.
These include the Fontaine des Naïades, located at the bottom of the steps of the Galerie Ravenstein, the fountain at the Bourse, the Continental fountain, the Maelbeek fountain and the Auguste Orts fountain.
The Anspach basins and the fountain on the Vieux Marché aux Grains will also be upgraded.
“With the six-year plan, which I wanted to be realistic and measured, I want to restore them to their rightful place in the city and reveal, fountain after fountain, the cultural and historical wealth they embody,” Frelinx said.
The hope is also that the restorations will help to enhance the capital’s appeal to tourists while also improving the quality of life and conviviality of public spaces.
