Brussels to host four Euro 2020 games

Belgium's Euro 2020 bid team
10:50 22/09/2014

Belgium will stage another major football tournament after the Brussels was awarded three group games and a last-16 match of Euro 2020.

The games will be played in the planned Eurostadium, with a capacity of 62,613, which is due to be built by 2018, replacing the aging King Baudouin stadium in Heysel. The Eurostadium is set to be both the national stadium for the Belgian team’s home games, and Anderlecht’s new home. However, there are still question marks about what the stadium will be like, as the Brussels authorities, the Royal Belgian Football Association and Anderlecht have still to agree the final details. The stadium is expected to cost €314,3 million to build.

Unlike previous tournaments, Euro 2020 will take place in 13 different countries. Wembley Stadium in London will host the final and semi-finals, while the other games will be hosted by Munich, Rome, St Petersburg, Dublin, Glasgow, Copenhagen, Bucharest, Amsterdam, Bilbao, Budapest, and Baku in Azerbaijan. The last top football event staged by Belgium was the Euro 2000 tournament, co-hosted with the Netherlands.
