Brussels flower carpet to mark 50 years of Turkish migration

11:54 15/05/2014

The City of Brussels on Wednesday announced its plans for the 19th edition of the famous floral carpet on the Grand Place. This year’s edition, from August 14 to 17, celebrates 50 years of Turkish migration to Belgium by following the same pattern as traditional Turkish and Ottoman carpets.

“This edition marks 50 years of Turkish migration to Belgium with a flower carpet inspired by Turkish and Ottoman kilims,” Mayor Yvan Mayeur told Brusselnieuws.be.

The construction of the 77-by-24m carpet will be broadcast live via webcam on the City of Brussels website. About 120 volunteers will install the carpet of almost 600,000 begonias in less than four hours.

Every evening after 22.00 the flower carpet will be further highlighted by a sound and light show on the Grand Place.
