Brussels fireworks draw 100,000 spectators

11:21 02/01/2015

New Year’s fireworks at the new location on Place de Brouckère drew an estimated 100,000 people to the centre of Brussels on December 31. The event was a success and without incidents, reports brusselnieuws.be.

It was the first time that Brussels’ annual fireworks show took place on Place de Brouckère. At midnight, spectators were treated to a fireworks display that lasted 15 minutes and 33 seconds, with 10,000 fireworks set off from the roof of the Continental Hotel.

According to Mayor Yvan Mayeur’s spokesperson, 100,000 people attended the celebration, about the same as last year. The city centre started to fill with people from 22.30, and Place de Brouckère was eventually closed off due to the large crowds.

There were no major incidents reported. In the run up to the event, there was some controversy as to whether the square was a safe location for the annual fireworks.
