Brasseries Georges wins Brussels shrimp croquette contest

11:01 04/10/2023

Les Brasseries Georges in Uccle has been named the winner in the fourth edition of the Brussels competition for the best shrimp croquette.

The competition was organised by visit.brussels and featured a jury consisting of culinary journalists and chefs, who chose the winner from a total of 20 participating establishments after a blind tasting.

Points were awarded based on a number of criteria, including the crispness, flavour and quality of the shrimp. As the winner, Brasseries Georges may now boast the title of best shrimp croquette in Brussels for a year.

Brasserie des Alexiens and Brasserie Ommegang, both in the city centre, came second and third respectively.

Le Soir’s jury member also noted the shrimp croquette from Bistro de la Woluwe as a standout.

"In fact, in addition to the crunchiness so sought-after in a croquette worthy of the name and the legendary flavour of the dish, the Bistro de la Woluwé brasserie added a little extra that, in our opinion, made all the difference – a verrine of lobster bisque into which you dunk your croquette," the judge wrote.

"It’s a detail that may not please shrimp croquette purists, who are used to croquettes in their simplest form – surrounded by crispy breadcrumbs and topped with fried parsley.

"This one from the well-known brasserie in Woluwé-Saint-Lambert has dared to twist the original recipe by adding this powerful juice to enhance the flavour of the prawns."
