Belgians commute longest of all Europeans

11:14 17/12/2014

Of all Europeans, Belgians spend the most amount of time travelling to and from work, according to a European study commissioned by Samsung Electronics, Metro reports.

On average, Belgians commute 53.2 minutes a day, compared to the European average of just less than 45 minutes. One in five Belgians spend two hours a day commuting. The time Belgians spend commuting adds up to an average of nearly seven full days a year.

An overwhelming majority of Belgians drive to work (64.2%). Other popular means of transport are the train and bus (22.8% and 16.4%, respectively). The commuters who use public transport are most annoyed by delays, while those who drive report that traffic jams bother them most about commuting.

I reckon part of the reason is that Belgians are not very mobile in terms of places to live. They would rather drive further than move house.
