Belgian artist Benoît planning commemorative work for Maelbeek
Benoît Van Innis, the Belgian artist who made the drawings in Maelbeek metro station, is planning to produce an artwork to commemorate the victims of the 22 March terror attacks, he told Brusselnieuws. He is not yet sure exactly how the new artwork will look, but has promised a "poetic, subtle memorial."
Benoît yesterday visited the Maelbeek station to assess the damage. The portraits on the platforms were almost completely spared. "There's some white tile missing here and there, which can easily be replaced."
Benoît will collaborate with architect Paul Vermeulen, who worked on the total concept of the metro station. The artist is also in contact with Brussels public transport authority STIB to work out a proposal. He estimates that the new work will be ready by June.
It will be typical Benoît style, he said: "A poetic image, perhaps with the date of the attacks."
