Belgian Army to continue presence in Afghanistan
Belgium has committed to continue its military assistance in Afghanistan until the end of NATO’s long-time mission. The decision will see the army maintain its operations until late 2014 when the international military presence plans to withdraw forces.
Belgium has also promised additional support to its EU and NATO allies in the second half of 2014 by sending a frigate to the Horn of Africa to join the anti-piracy operation.
The country’s presence in Afghanistan will have military forces take up position in two regions of Afghanistan. In ongoing support, the army will continue to train Afghan soldiers in the north, where instructors will be provided to the training centres. In the south, Belgium will maintain air support with six F-16 fighter jets stationed near Kandahar.
