Antwerp motorways Belgium's most dangerous

12:35 31/10/2014

The most dangerous motorways in Belgium are the Antwerp ring road and the expressway from Antwerp to the coast (A11), according to a study by the Belgian Institute for Road Safety and the federal traffic police.

In the last five years, there have been 582 fatalities due to accidents on Belgian motorways, which is four times more than in urban areas. The fatal accidents were mostly due to speeding, failing to wear a seat belt, alcohol abuse and increased traffic.

Accidents that occur on the motorway are often more serious than other traffic accidents, with nearly 7% of motorway accidents in Belgium resulting in serious injuries, while around 16% of motorway accidents result in fatalities.

Agree with Mikek1300gt. And Belgian motorways are amongst the deadliest in Europe. Take a short drive and it becomes clear as to why. Before I actually lived here, I was always found driving through Belgium a scary experience. Living here, I've learned how to 'read' Belgian drivers and anticipate their stupid, dangerous moves. Defensive driving is vital for survival on Belgian roads.
