23:00 05/11/2018

The head chef at a restaurant opposite Anderlecht abbatoir has been named this year's best in Belgium in the latest edition of Gault&Millau's gastronomy guide.

David Martin took the top prize of chef of the year for his work at La Paix restaurant, succeeding last year's winner Eric Fernez at D'Eugénie à Emilie in Baudour, Hainaut province.

Sang-Hoon Degeimbre's L'Air du Temps in Liernu, Namur province, was the biggest climber in this year's Gault&Millau rankings, scoring 19 out of 20. The highest score - 19.5 - is still awarded to Hof van Cleve in Kruishoutem and Bon-Bon in Woluwe-Saint-Pierre.

Gault&Millau named its three most promising young chefs - one in each Belgian region. They are Maxime Maziers (Bruneau restaurant in Ganshoren), Maxime Zimmer (Un Max de Goût in Sprimont, Liège province) and Thijs Vervloet (Colette restaurant in Westerlo, Antwerp province).

The guide also praised the work of Le Tournant in Ixelles, Attablez-Vous in Namur and Restaurant 54 in Tongeren. Artisan of the year went to Luc Broutard at Le Table du Boucher in Mons.
