Alcohol ban in Brussels night shops during World Cup

09:23 03/06/2014

During the World Cup, which kicks off on June 12, the night shops in the centre of Brussels will not be allowed to sell alcohol between 22.00 and 7.00, according to a decision made by the Brussels city council on Monday.

The ban applies to the downtown district, which includes the area around Place Saint-Géry/Sint-Goriksplein, the UNESCO perimeter around the Grand Place/Grote Markt, the Boulevard Anspach/Anspachlaan area and the neighbourhood around Place Sainte-Catherine/Sint-Katelijneplein.

The ban prohibits only the sale of alcohol, however it will still be allowed to consume alcohol in the centre between those hours.

The experimental measure is an initiative of Mayor Yvan Mayeur, who has in the past been known to implement plans to try to curb excessive alcohol use and nuisance in the city centre.

The ban is ridiculous and will achieve absolutely nothing.

On a more positive note, I'm glad the Bulletin staff has finally seen sense and re-instituted the French names to streets in Brussels. No offence to the Flemings, but honestly, WHO has ever heard of Sint Goriksplein? Not even the Flemish speakers say that...

Flemings need to learn to pick the right fights in Brussels.... And frankly the Bulletin ought to have known better than starting down this ridiculous linguistic path of Flemish only street names in English speaking articles ....
