Actiris, the Brussels employment office, has published a list of more than 40 courses providing training in occupations where staff are currently in short supply.

The list includes opportunities to study in areas such as construction, electricity, cooking, baking, medicine, speech therapy, metallurgy, carpentry and education.

Actiris revealed that many school leavers and adults searching for a new job often find it hard to choose a profession, which is why it publishes the list of studies in trades experiencing an employee shortage. "In essence, these sectors offer a lot of opportunities and almost guarantee employment," the Brussels employment office said in a statement.

Jobseekers who decide to take part in training may, under certain conditions, continue to receive unemployment benefits for the duration of their studies. Last year, more than 9,000 job seekers who were registered with Actiris embarked on a training or apprenticeship.
