600 demonstrate in Brussels for the closure of slaughterhouses

16:32 13/06/2016

An estimated 600 people in Brussels on Sunday afternoon participated in the global march for the closing of all slaughterhouses, the fifth edition of the annual event worldwide and the second edition in Belgium.

The red-clad activitsts gathered at Brussels Central Station and marched through the city centre, carrying banners with slogans such as "Not in refrigerators, not in slaughterhouses” and “Justice for animals".

At Place de la Monnaie, the protesters threw themselves on the ground and made the sounds of animals suffering. Afterwards, they returned to Central Station where the organisers served vegetarian food.

The initiator of the Brussels event is animal rights organisation Bite Back. "Let's get together en masse to speak out against the slaughter of animals in livestock and fishing industries. Let's demand the closure of all slaughterhouses and the abolition of animal exploitation. Let's stand together for a peaceful and just future for the animals," urged Benjamin Loison of Bite Back.
