5,000 march in Brussels for self-determination

12:55 31/03/2014

More than 5,000 people from various European citizens' movements, including the Flemish People's Movement, marched on Sunday in Brussels. The protesters want the right to self-determination to be recognised by the European institutions.

The group gathered around 11.00 at Parc Cinquantenaire/Jubelpark and took a tour through Brussels in the afternoon under police supervision.

Not only Flemish flags were waving throughout the march, but also Catalan and Scottish flags.

"For the first time in history, social organisations from across Europe are working together to establish a positive campaign for self-determination and independence," said Steven Vergauwen of the Flemish People's Movement.

The march was preceded by a petition to show support for the cause, which collected 550,000 signatures of mostly Catalans, Scots and Flemings.
