25 bottlenose dolphins spotted off Belgian coast

22:43 17/07/2018

A group of about 25 bottlenose dolphins were spotted off the Belgian coast on Monday, the Natural Sciences Museum has reported.

The museum said that while sightings of individual dolphins in the area occurred from time to time, it was rare to see such a large group at once - including several baby dolphins.

"On Monday we conducted a combined marine mammal survey and pollution control flight over Belgian waters," the museum said on Facebook.

"In the afternoon we noticed dolphins to the northwest of the Westhinder sandbank, about 37km from the coast. It turned out to be a group of about 25 bottlenose dolphins, with a few calves, which quickly swam north.

"Solitary bottlenose dolphins are observed from time to time in our waters, but a group such as this is rarely seen."
