20 Brussels events in 2020: #1. Dali & Magritte

01:01 01/01/2019

To mark the 10th anniversary of the Magritte Museum, the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium are presenting an unprecedented exhibition dedicated to both Salvador Dalí and René Magritte. For the first time, the connection and influences between the two great icons of the surrealist movement are featured together in one exhibition.

In the spring of 1929, Salvador Dalí and René Magritte met in Paris. In August of the same year, at Dalí's invitation, Magritte travelled to Cadaqués, the Spanish painter's home base. This surrealist summer which also included visits by Éluard, Miró and Buñuel was a milestone in the two painters’ artistic development.

Dalí and Magritte both aim to challenge reality and question our certainties - but they do it in very different ways. The exhibition reveals the personal, philosophical and aesthetic links between the two artists through more than 100 paintings, sculptures, photographs, drawings, film clips and archival objects.

Additionally, the museum has reselected the paintings on display from the permanent collection for you to discover.

Until 9 February, Royal Museums of Fine Arts
