20 Brussels events in 2020: #2. Achterland

Some 30 years ago, Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker created Achterland which was a pivotal turning point in her work. It was the first time that she choreographed a work that included male dancers. 

It was also the first time that she gave the musicians a central position on stage and let them play an active role in the overall dynamic, an approach she would repeat in many subsequent projects.

The unusual combination of György Ligeti’s and Eugène Ysaÿe’s music inspired her to create a dance score that balances energetic virtuosity with minimalism.

This production is a unique opportunity to see a seminal contemporary dance piece by an icon of the movement performed with exuberance by a very talented, youthful ensemble.
