190,000 Belgians have yet to file tax return

11:18 04/10/2016

The FPS Finance this week started sending out reminder letters to the nearly 190,000 Belgian taxpayers who have not filed their taxes for income year 2015, writes Het Nieuwsblad. While the taxpayers still have time to file, they could risk a fine and/or tax increase.

"As of 3 October, 189,951 taxpayers in our country will receive a reminder letter by post because they have not yet filed their tax return for personal income earned in 2015,” confirms the finance ministry. "If you receive such a letter, get your tax return in as quickly as possible. Otherwise, you risk a penalty notice and possibly a tax increase."

The only way to avoid a penalty at this point is to use the services of a qualified accountant, who has until 27 October to file for you. Taxpayers can also still fill out the forms themselves, but it could take the tax authorities until well into 2018 to process the late files.
