130,000 sign petition to shut down Tielt slaughterhouse

14:52 27/03/2017

A petition launched by the organisation Animal Rights calling for the immediate and permanent closure of a slaughterhouse in Tielt, West Flanders, has gathered more than 130,000 signatures, writes De Morgen. The slaughterhouse was temporarily closed by the Flemish minister for animal welfare Ben Weyts after graphic undercover footage of slaughterhouse staff abusing pigs made national headlines last week.

Animal Rights launched the petition on Thursday in the wake of public outrage over the shocking footage. On the fifth day, the petition has collected more than 130,000 signatures. The animal rights organisation will soon transfer the list to minister Weyts.

Animal Rights will also hold a silent protest in front of the West Flemish slaughterhouse on 3 April at 10.00, where Gaia director Michel Vandenbosch will speak, among others.
