WWI shell found at nuclear site

11:20 28/02/2013

An unexploded World War One shell found on the grounds of Tihange nuclear power plant in Wallonia was safely removed by the Belgian army’s bomb disposal unit. Electrabel spokeswoman Anne-Sophie Hugé said the shell had been found during drainage work yesterday in front of an administrative building outside a reactor’s fenced security perimeter. She said about 20 staff members had to evacuate the office until the bomb squad removed the shell, but she could not say how close the shell was to the reactors’ secured area or provide details on its size. Hugé added that the two online reactors at the site, near the town of Huy, Liège province, continued to operate normally.
