World Soundtrack Awards nominations announced

The nominations have been announced for the 16th World Soundtrack Awards, which takes place in Ghent on 19 October. The awards are part of the Ghent Film Festival and sees world-famous film composers arrive in the city to attend and perform at the ceremony.

Among the five nominees for Film Composer of the Year are American composer Carter Burwell, who worked on several titles over the last year, including Anomalisa and Hail, Caesar!; American composer Thomas Newman, whose recent work includes Finding Dory and Bridge of Spies; and the legendary Italian Ennio Morricone, with the French film Come What May, the Italian film Correspondence and Quentin Tarantino’s blood-filled western The Hateful Eight.

Other categories include Best TV Composer, with nominations including the composers of House of Cards, Game of Thrones and American Horror Story, and Best Original Song. A Lifetime Achievement award will be given to the multi-talented Ryuichi Sakamoto, who will be present to accept the award.

Sakamoto’s long list of film scores includes The Last Emperor, The Revenant and Merry Christmas, Mr Lawrence. The Brussels Philharmonic and Vlaams Radio Koor will perform a selection of Sakamoto’s works for cinema.
