Mini D Festival opens with family performance Wreck in Brussels on 15 April

The family-orientated Mini D Festival kicks off with Wreck – List of extinct species, a multidisciplinary project that mixes dance, visual arts, sound and new technology.

With nine shows for children aged four months to 12 years, the festival is staged in six venues in the capital from 15 to 26 April.

The opening event is an Insieme Irreali production and choreographed by Brussels-based Italian artist Pietro Marullo. It has already been staged more than 100 times in 24 different countries.

At the centre of Wreck (pictured above) is a large floating inflatable structure that moves through space like a hunter, gently swallowing and spitting out humans. The abstract forms that it creates throws up a number of possibilities. Is this an image of humanity or the shadow of an imminent catastrophe?

"Wreck stages, through movement, a change of narrative to imagine another relationship to the world,” says Marullo.

Over 12 days, the festival offers a wide range of dance, live music, storytelling and circus shows for all ages. It’s aimed at making contemporary dance accessible to young audiences, both in school groups and accompanied by their families.

As well as Théâtre Marni, venues include Théâtre Mercelis, Charleroi danse / La Raffinerie, Maison des Cultures et de la Cohésion Sociale de Molenbeek and Senghor. There will also be an outdoor acrobat duo performing for free in Place Fernand Cocq on 22 April at 15.00.
