Brussels Muzieque brings string quartet concert to Brussels on 18 December

Brussels Muzique concert on 18 December - The Bulletin competition
14:17 09/12/2022
The Bulletin has pairs of tickets to give away for the concert at Full Circle

For its final concert of the year Brussels Muzieque stages an unconventional string quartet recital on 18 December.

Featuring not one but two cellos, it promises an evening full of warm vibrations to lift spirits during the darkest season of the year.

If string quartets represent the most prominent chamber ensembles in classical music, this unhabitual formation focuses on mid and low musical frequencies, creating a darker and resonant timbre.

The concert’s repertoire is also unique in featuring Brussels Muzieque’s composer-in-residence, Walter Hus. He’s contributed a new work for this ensemble; an adaptation of his string quartet Five to Five, in which a cello performs instead of the original viola.

Rounding off the programme is Ravel’s sonata for violin and cello, another piece showcasing the latter instrument. It’s a rare occurrence in the world of string music. Prior to the French composer, the violin predominated in pieces written for duets; the cello relegated to the role of accompanying instrument. With this sonata, both instruments are equal partners and each are given a chance to shine by taking the melodic line.

Performing in this special concert are a quartet of fine musicians who are determined to brighten a dark winter night with their rendition of these masterpieces. Misako Akama (concertmaster at the Belgian National Orchestra), Monika Mlynarczyk (co-principal viola at La Monnaie/De Munt), Dmitry Silvian (solo cello at the Belgian National Orchestra), and Eduardo Tonietto (cellist and artistic director of Brussels Muzieque).

The concert has the financial support of Wallonia-Brussels and sponsorship from Delen Private Bank.
