Retrospective of Brussels artist of Spanish origin at the Centrale for Contemporary Art

The exhibition is the first retrospective on Emilio López-Menchero. From the moment the show was agreed, the Brussels artist, a qualified architect, began measuring the space available at the venue in order to make it his own. He then produced a scale model and positioned works reduced to the size of a stamp. This model was used in the discussions with exhibition curator Carine Fol.

A multi-faceted artist, Emilio López-Menchero is an architect, a painter, a photographer and a performer. In Brussels, he set up meaningful objects, such as Pasionaria, a megaphone placed upright on a small stage, at the beginning of the Avenue de Stalingrad near the Gare du Midi train station. He produced performances in the city, such as Checkpoint Charlie (2010), which marked the transition between two areas of the Canal, between Dansaert and its trendy shops and the popular district of Chaussée de Gand.

His installation entitled BXL aux Brigittines transformed the deconsecrated chapel by projecting images of workers employed on the construction site of the European Parliament in Brussels. Some of the poses struck by workers were strangely reminiscent of scenes of the Passion of Christ, thereby subtly sacralising work.
