White powder found on train being analysed for anthrax

15:35 07/11/2019

A train was held up for three hours yesterday afternoon when a suspicious white powder was discovered. The train was travelling from Brussels to Ostend.

The train was routed to an unused track near Denderleeuw at about 16.45 on Wednesday. The 32 passengers and rail staff on board were not allowed off until a specialised Hazmat team could collect the powder and inspect the train.

Concerned that the powder might contain anthrax bacteria, the team then assisted departing passengers with disinfecting their hands and feet. “The passengers had to stay on the train and were supplied with food and water,” said Denderleeuw mayor Jo Fonck. “The powder is now on its way to a lab for further analysis.”

It has not been announced exactly where or how the powder was discovered.
