The cold snap means about 30 resorts are open to the public in the south of the country

Who says you cannot ski in Belgium? More than 30 ski resorts are open in the south of the country this week.

Cross-country and downhill ski routes can be found in in the provinces of Liège, Luxembourg, Hainaut and Namur following the heavy snowfall - up to 50cm in the Hautes-Fagnes - and widespread freezing that took place in recent days.

Some 18 ski resorts for cross-country and downhill skiing have opened in the east of Liege province, and another four in Spa (Thier des Rexhons), Stoumont (Mont des Brumes), Lierneux (Le Monty) and Trois-Ponts (Val de Wanne).

Ski schools in Weywertz and Elsenborn have been busy, with a large number of sign-ups from Antwerp and Limburg provinces in particular.

In Luxembourg province, nine tracks are open to the public at Baraque Fraiture, Samrée, Gouvy, Martelange, Champlon and Saint-Hubert. The Senonchamps ski slopes are accessible between the hours of 13.00 and 17.00. The Maugires à Bertrix piste is open for the first time this season.

In Hainaut and Namur, slopes in Rieze (Chimay) and La Croix Scaille (Gedinne) are ready for skiers.
