What's on this week: 16-22 June

Bozar invites visitors to discover the Brussels of yesteryear, courtesy of local publishing house Plaizier. The exhibition Brussels is a Plaizier documents the changing urban landscape of the capital through nearly a half-century of archival images ranging from postcards to prints to calendars to books. The collection has been kept since 1977 by publishing power couple Wijnand and Mieke Plaizier, who have contributed immensely to the collective memory. Not only do these artefacts trace the growing pains of a national capital as it evolves into a European metropolis, they also indicate changing aesthetic values and print technologies.

In more than 100 countries music is celebrated in the days leading up to the Summer Solstice. Belgium is no exception and on the 21st there will be events all over Brussels such as the Fête de la Musique from 10.00 to midnight in the schools, nursing homes, streets, cafés, terraces and bars of the Marolles. But new this year, on Sunday 18 June, for the first time City Hall on the Grand-Place will be open from 13.00 to 18.30 for contemporary, classical, jazz, rock, folk and beat box music played by seven groups (each concert to be repeated three times) in seven different city hall rooms. It's free but each person is limited to a maximum of four different concerts. This is the first time that so many of city hall's splendid rooms are open to the public at the same time. Additionally the city hall courtyard will be turned into a bar for the day.

For the centenary of the death of Auguste Rodin, the Rodin Museum in Paris has produced the exhibition Quand Rodin vivait à Bruxelles. Rodin moved to Brussels in 1871 and was quite active, producing sculptures for the Bourse, the Royal Palace, the Royal Conservatory and the Palace of the Academies among others. In 1877 he also created his first major personal sculpture l'Age d'Airain, the full-scale statue of a young Belgian soldier. Enjoying Brussels and including walks in the Sonian Forest with his companion Rose Beuret, Rodin called his Brussels period "the best years of my life".

Artistic director and flamenco dancer Antonio Martinez presents his latest choreography, Flamenco Sentimientos, about feelings and the kind of inner depth and sensations that make life worth living, with voice, guitar and percussion accompaniment.

The Belgian Comics Art Museum, housed in a magnificent Victor Horta-designed building, is currently hosting two exhibitions. The first, Asterix in Belgium, takes the famous quote by Julius Caesar in the Gallic Wars: "Of all the Gauls, the Belgians are the bravest enemies I have ever faced" and this is the driving force behind the story. The quote gets on the nerves of the inhabitants of a little Gallic village in Armorica including Asterix and Obelix, whom the Romans have not managed to defeat. To pay homage to this "historical" work of art, in which Nervians and Menapians end up battling side by side, and in which we witness the birth of Brussels and courier services, waterzooi and French fries, the Belgian Comics Art Museum has come up with an exhibition that is also a learning game, which gives everyone the opportunity to measure the extent of their Belgianness. The second exhibition is devoted to Zidrou, the French comic book author who is famous for his dog character Sac à Puces (Fleabag), his "worst student in the world" Ducobu and currently his plus-size teenager Tamara.

For the first time Makerstown will be taking place in Brussels at Autoworld. "The makers are a new wave of entrepreneurs and do-it-yourself experts empowered by Web 3.0 tools, technology and crowdfunding," explain the organisers. "From 3D printing to robotics, from wearable technology to new ICT, from food to fashion bringing together makers, business leaders and European policymakers to showcase, share and succeed. Hundreds of local students have been invited but the event is open to everyone.

Have a start-up you want to start up? Girleek - "the only tech event with more women than men" is holding its sixth event in collaboration with Café Numérique at the Aim in Schaerbeek. This event is free and open to everybody (men included) interested about tech, networking and entrepreneurship, but also curious about women's perspectives on new technology. Come and network with other women from the tech industry, share your ideas and make new friends. Six start-ups will be the guest stars of the evening, including Sweet Mama Box, a box that aims to facilitate the daily life of future and young mothers.

If you missed the Brussels Jazz Weekend or if you can't get enough jazz in your life, it's the 28th edition of JazzJetteJune, the biggest jazz day in the north of Brussels. It starts with an opening concert on Cardinal Mercier Square at 19.00 and then, from 21.00, 16 cafés host jazz across Jette. And at Le Central from 23.00 until late it's 100% vinyl by Arnie Goes DJ.

A 24-hour non-stop relay organised by the international community of Belgium this weekend aims to raise tens of thousands of euros for cancer research, prevention and treatment. Relay for Life was brought to Belgium from the US in 2011 and has grown ever since. It's not too late to get involved and show your support.
